The first location of Khovd City was in the Ulaankhargana area on the banks of the Khovd river in Erdeneburen soum. From the end of the 17 th century until the beginning of the 18 th century, this site is believed it to have been the fort of Galdan Khaan`s army. Due to complex historical circumstances and extreme weather conditions, Khovd city was relocated to its current location on the Buyant river in 1762.
